THE BLUE SCHOOL AND ITS SETTING The Blue School, a one-room schoolhouse serving students in Kindergarten through Grade 3, is nestled in a valley within the town of Landaff, in the foothills of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Landaff is a small and friendly town of about 380 people who are proud and supportive of their one-room school. A three-member school board oversees the management of the school, assisted by the SAU administration. The uniqueness of this multi-age program enhances a sense of harmony and togetherness among our students, who help each other and learn from one another. Older children are more sensitive to the younger students’ needs and abilities, while younger students acquire a stronger base of knowledge as they listen to the older children’s lessons. Younger students have successfully used computer software that is geared toward older students. The Blue School has a full-time teacher/administrator, a halftime teaching assistant, and inclusion aides as needed. Our part-time staff consists of an art teacher, music teacher, physical education/health teacher, a librarian, guidance, nurse, lunch transporter and custodian. The part-time teaching staff works with students every week for one hour. Students leave The Blue School at the end of third grade and finish their education at Lisbon Regional School. |
GENERAL INFORMATION Transportation: Information is available from the school or transporter Wally Berry at 838-6700. Kindergarten students may ride the regular morning bus to school. CURRICULUM and INSTRUCTION Speaking, listening, reading, spelling, and writing are basic to other learning and success in our society. Our literacy block is first thing in the morning. Reading: The goal of our reading instruction is to promote independent readers. Starting in kindergarten, reading is taught using skills from phonemic awareness, phonics, word and alphabet work, and guided reading. These skills are taught in whole and small groups. Reading progress is tracked frequently so as to inform instruction. Formal assessments are administered in September, January, and May. Other assessments are administered as required. Spelling and Handwriting: Cast-a Spell is the chosen method of spelling instruction, beginning in kindergarten. The Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Method is the chosen method for handwriting instruction. Writing: The art of written composition is taught in a number of different ways. The goals are for children to be able to write short stories independently. Various genres of writing are taught. The children participate in interactive writing to include revising and editing. Mathematics: Everyday Math is the chosen series for math instruction. The program is augmented using a variety of materials and methods, depending upon the needs. Math portfolio problems give the children an opportunity to show their ‘math’ thinking using charts, diagrams, graphs, and language to show their solutions. Science: The science curriculum is driven by the New Hampshire State Frameworks and the SAU curriculum. A classroom Grolab provides many science lessons. The outdoors is used extensively for many topics across the curriculum. Scientific inquiry and problem solving are the basic premises;” What do you think?” Social Studies: The social studies curriculum is driven by the New Hampshire State Frameworks. The local community serves as a resource for many studies. Global cultures are studied through the lens of the arts. Fine and Performing Arts: Art, drama, music, and dance are integrated throughout the curriculum without losing their individual identities. Specialists provide direct instruction in art and music. Physical Education: Physical education takes place outdoors, taking advantage of the rural environment. Library: The lending library has an extensive collection of children’s books. Technology: We have five work stations all connected to the internet. Children use computers for word processing, research, and learning games to augment other areas of the curriculum. Special Help: Speech/Language and Occupational Therapy are available. Grading Periods: Grades are issued 4 times yearly. Testing: All 3rd grade students participate in the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP). |
